It's My Fucking Birthday
I belong in the bad friend Hall Of Shame. I berated a friend for "waking me up in the middle of the night" when she called at 9am to wish me a happy birthday. I accused another friend of making my ears bleed when he rather sweetly broke into a rendition of "Happy Birthday". I broke a lunch date, decided to disown anyone who had not phoned me by midday and cancelled dinner plans with my family by sending a group SMS along the lines of "I'd rather choke on my own vomit than be in the same room as you"! It was like an out of body experience; I went to sleep as a relatively normal human being and woke up as Linda Blair in "The Exorcist". And then, I snapped out of it and spent the afternoon calling up everyone to apologise. Thankfully, most of my friends were more amused than offended and my mum assumed I was joking. The rest of the day was a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to partying tomorrow night. I have no idea what came over me!
I've just realised that this post is pretty pointless apart from advertising the fact that I occasionally behave like a crazy person. I might use this post to deal with a couple of bits and pieces that I have been wanting to share. Firstly, there are a couple of hot new Blogs that I highly recommend.
Fabulous New Blogs:
Jamie's Movie Trip
This Blog is a trash lover's wet dream. Jamie has dedicated his Blog to my favourite movie genre: B-grade trash! It should be illegal to feature this much Morgan Fairchild! I've known Jamie for several years and I can testify to his expert knowledge of all that is craptastic. Jamie is one of the co-founders of the Church of La Toya and will be instantly familiar to anyone who has ever posted at "Say Hey". I just can't work out how Jamie finds the time to make so many wonderful posts and keep his title as England's number 1 dogging enthusiast. I guess he takes his laptop with him!
PopMusicWorldWide
I only came across this stunning new Blog today. It's new but already has the makings of something special. Dina Carroll, Sertab, Monica Naranjo and Anna Vissi - yes please! This is definitely one to watch!
The Best Blog of January 07
I also need to give some well deserved praise to the Blog that has made my summer. You all know Deirdre Halliwell as the world's premier tranny pop diva and the blind man's sex symbol, but her amazing Pop Blog is less well known. Anyone who likes the content of "Pop Trash Addicts" will love:
Cheesy Pop Music
I breathed a sigh of relief when Deirdre Halliwell finally pulled her fist out of her gaping hole and updated "Cheesy Pop Music". In fact, I have a suspicion that Eddy strapped Deirdre in front of the computer and made her work for the entire first week of January. The quality of the music is unbelievable - rare Sinitta, Liza, Kelly Marie, Samantha Fox, Hazell Dean, Marcia Hines, Marlene Dietrich, Rebbie Jackson and Tiffany! Deirdre has not only posted the most fabulous collection of artists in Blog history but has included her first new single of the year, an amazing cover of Nelly Furtado's "Maneater" called "(I've Gotta) Mangina!". I'm truly in awe!
Tidbits
Watch an amazing tribute to La Toya's antics on "Armed & Famous" here. The soundtrack is La Toya's brilliant "No More Drama".
Watch the entire second episode of "Armed & Famous"! The scene where La Toya goes to the local corner store in a red velour tracksuit and asks for caviar and champagne is possibly the most fabulous thing I've ever seen. That is, until La Toya gets therapy for her cat phobia. I'm hooked!
How amazing is Kylie's "White Diamond"? I just can't get it out of my head!
The promos for Dannii's reality show, "Australia's Got Talent" have started to air. Basically, all of the contestants are trannies and tragic homosexuals if this preview is any indication. I'm not saying anything!
Enjoy Dannii's first brush with reality TV on "Celebrity Wheel Of Fortune" here!
Watch Gina Riley (Kim from "Kath & Kim") take the piss out of Dannii with her interpretation of "Love & Kisses", called All You Need Is A Famous Sister. Sorry Dannii, but it's still fucking hilarious!
Finally, a big thanks to Neil for sending me so many wonderful goodies!

New Year's Resolution #3

Resolution #3 - I'm Going On A Manhunt!
This is my third, and last, New Year's resolution post. I've decided that the whole resolution process is a load of crap anyway. So far I've vowed to get fit and work out my career. My last resolution is the most ambitious - to find the last decent, single gay man in Australia. I might as well have resolved to build a time machine or to revive Dannii's music career! With my track record of married men, drug dealers and general psychos, this resolution is going to take some doing. Therefore, I have brought out the big guns for some moral support and advice.
Firstly, some mood music. Given my deep love of all things Euro-trash, it seems only fitting to begin with Nicki French's spinster anthem, "Is There Anybody Out There?". Let's face it, Nicki is about as trashy as it gets. I love her dearly but surely Nicki's grandchildren should lock her away in a nursing home. Nicki claims to be in her 40s but I think she has forgotten several decades due to dementia. It's a sad day when you identify with Nicki French. I thought chasing Melissa Tkautz across the dancefloor of a gay nightclub screaming "sexy is STILL the word!" was my lowest moment but musing over Nicki's overwrought, self-pitying lyrics such as "feeling like a song without a tune" is surely even more desperate.
Nicki isn't the only fabulous has-been to express how I'm feeling with regards to men and dating. New Zealand's amazing Sharon O'Neill has recorded a number of songs dealing with man trouble but the most applicable to moi is still her 80s hit "How Do You Talk To Boys", which I shared in one of my very first posts. Sharon was so far ahead of her time, it boggles the mind. This song tells the tragic tale of a woman who can't communicate with people she would like to fuck. I love the line about boring herself to tears.
I have no idea what Jenny Wilson is on about most of the time, but Robyn's some time duet partner hits the nail on the head with her opus "Love Ain't Just A Four Letter Word". I think. Jenny Wilson is possibly the most annoying bitch in pop. When she's good she's brilliant but when she's bad, she's the female Jose Gonzalez. Gross. This song is slightly depressing in a serious, Swedish artiste kind of way but catchy enough not to make you suicidal. I think the message of the song is meant to be uplifting... but I could be wrong.
If nothing else, I'm quite certain that this will be the only post in the history of Blogging to contain both Jenny Wilson and Collette! Collette is one of my favourite Australian pop divas from the 1980s. Collette only had one big hit but her obsession with bike pants is still being parodied today. Collette mostly recorded bright, happy songs for people to listen to on ecstasy. That is probably the reason why "Ordinary Man" has always seemed slightly out of place in Collette's catalogue of "hits". There is a definite twist of melancholy to "Ordinary Man" - although it is well hidden under Collette's unorthodox (ie. crap) vocals and the gloriously cheesy beats. This is my current anthem. No 80s loving homosexual pop fan should be without "Ordinary Man" in their collection.Ok, enough depressing mood music. It's time to get pro-active! When faced with man trouble, Millie Jackson sought the advice of a love doctor. I wonder if this love doctor takes Visa and makes house calls... Whatever the case may be, "Love Doctor" is one of Millie's finest moments - and there is not a sexercise in sight! Just as fabulous, only in a slightly tragic way, is Karen Kamon's "Manhunt". Karen preaches a more direct approach to snaring a man and who am I to disagree? The flaw in Karen's thesis is surely the quality of man you will pick up while dancing like a slut in a club. I guess "Manhunt" is the soundtrack for those days when you're only pre-requisites are a penis and a pulse. We've all been there!
It seems appropriate to finish this meandering post with a song about a tragic cyber loser! "Don't Stray From My Site" is hilarious and gorgeous at the same time. In fact, I've become so taken with this singer that she is the purchase of a strap-on away from being my soulmate! I'm talking about Natalie Imbruglia's far more talented sister, Laura. Laura Imbruglia's music is so good that it is almost scary. Expect to see a long and detailed post about Laura in the very near future. In the meantime, enjoy this song about internet losers. It has to be the first and only song to mention emoticons, Windows, LOL, LMAO and MSN. Laura is a genius. Fact.

New Year's Resolution #2

Resolution #2 - Sort Out My "Career"
This is the second of my new year's resolution posts. The aim is to basically post a selection of songs that inspire me to get my shit together. Hopefully, they have the same effect on other desperate losers reading this crap. The latest facet of my life screaming out for an overhaul is my career. Work is boring me to tears. I need to start doing something interesting before my boss finds me slumped over my computer, dead from chronic apathy. It's time to get in a new job frame of mind with two of the most famous work related songs of all time. I'm actually a bit ashamed that I haven't posted anything from these two amazing ladies before now because I am a massive fan of both. I guess, it's better late than never!

Dolly Parton's "9 To 5" and Sheena Easton's "Morning Train" approach employment from very different perspectives. Poor Dolly has to slug it out in the office, while fabulous Sheena suffers the massive ordeal of sending her man off to work in the morning. Personally, I think Sheena has by far the better deal. I really should consider being a gay housewife. I bet I could wave the morning train goodbye with just as much style as Sheena! I love both of these songs.
After much consideration, I don't think I'm suited to working all of those hours between 9 and 5, or to cleaning the house. I think Liza Minnelli's first gay husband and Australian icon, Peter Allen, may have had the answer with his classic "I Could Have Been A Sailor". The whole idea of being locked away for months with hot men is appealing but I don't like water or physical exertion. The Young Divas (and Donna Summers before them) sang about hocking one's box for cash with "She Works Hard For The Money". Unfortunately, I can barely give it away, so I doubt I would be overwhelmed with paying customers. Rather, I think the song that sums up everything that I am looking for in a job is Olivia Newton-John's "Queen Of The Publication". I would love to work at one of the cornerstones of journalism like "New Weekly", "News Of The World", "Star Magazine" or "Bild". I think I would be perfect at writing bitchy comments under pictures of celebrities without make-up and I was born to fabricate factually inaccurate stories about fading stars, minor royals and Z-list attention seekers. I most definitely would be the queen of the publication!
The next step in my career evolution is making things happen. I've decided to listen to the experts - Dannii Minogue and Melissa Tkautz. Like Dannii, I've been "really, really ready for success" for a while now. And like Dannii, I'm still waiting! I just hope that one day my life will be as glamorous as Melissa Tkautz's fabulous existence. Melissa has left behind a life of long days in a gay solarium to have a resurgent floptastic pop career. I think we can all learn from Melissa and her glamorous life!

Happy New Year!!
New Year's Resolution
Queen Toy's workout video is highly recommended - even if she admits doing the routine for the first time during filming!According to Oprah, the first step to overcoming a problem is admitting it. The late, unbelievably great, Wesley Willis expressed exactly how I am feeling with his classic "I'm Sorry That I Got Fat". I plan to pay tribute to Wesley with a detailed post later this year but until then, I think he's speaking for all of us with this amazing tune.
Ok, maybe that wasn't the greatest idea I've ever had. Listening to all that talk about burgers and fries has only made me hungry. I think it's time to slip on some leg warmers and shake my fat arse to some 80s pop songs before I have a relapse! The obvious starting point for any "pop trash" workout is Olivia Newton-John's "Physical". No other song is as closely associated with headbands and leotards as this classic. From the first verse to Olivia's final note, "Physical" is irresistable and more importantly, makes me want to jump on the nearest exercise bike.
The overwhelming success of "Physical" set off a brief but incredibly fabulous trend for workout songs. Two of my favourites are "Work That Body" by Diana Ross and "I Can Do Anything Better Than You Can" from the "Fame" television series. "Work That Body" is one of the best songs Diana released in the 80s. The song is beyond camp, with Diana calling her sisters to "work off that piece of cake"! Unfortunately, something is wrong with the "Work That Body" file I uploaded. An anti-climax, I know!
Those buns scare me!
"I Can Do Anything Better Than You Can" is a duet between Debbie Allen and Erica Gimpel. Fans of "Fame" will remember the song from the episode in which Lydia (Debbie Allen) challenges a local football team to a dance off, in order prove the fitness level of her students! Erica played Coco, the horsey star student, although she is probably best known for her current role on "Veronica Mars" these days. Just like everything else on the many amazing "Kids From Fame" albums, this song is a minor work of pop genius. Get stretching, girls!
I love Richard Simmons. I would work up a disco sweat with him any time!Surely dancing to a couple of three minute pop songs is a long enough workout for even the most serious athlete? I would hate for anyone to pull a muscle. The key is variety and I believe the answer lies with one of my favourite divas, the inimitable Millie Jackson. Millie's "Sexercise" is the most instructional workout song I've come across and is by far the most appealing to carry out! As Millie points out, the bedroom can be a gym and she has a selection of positions for everyone to try. Personally, I'll be working on my jaw muscles with Millie's helpful "A, E, I, O, U" oral sexercises.
In order to make up for the dud "Work That Body" file, I've uploaded another Millie J filth anthem. "Butt-A-Cize" is a sequel to "Sexercise", only this time Millie's workout routine is more specific! I know I could do with some "Butt-A-Cize" and I'm sure it will work wonders for flabby buns around Blog Land. I've uploaded a rare "Club Mix", although I'm not sure what kind of "club" would play it. I'm guessing one with plastic benches and lube dispensers. It's always classy at Pop Trash Addicts!
Buns Of Steel - Tai Chi. Hmmm.Trust me, we'll all be thinner than Nicole Ritchie in no time! If all else fails, there's always crystal meth. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

A Quickie
I'll post the song and a remix in the next few days but I'm currently trying to work on a top 30 for 2006 and a Christmas post. My top 30 isn't going very well as the depth of my poor taste has shocked even me! Expect to be appalled.
PS. I have added an e-mail address to my profile, so feel free to say hello!

Showgirl Homecoming 12th November - Review

It would kind of pointless for me to write an hysterically overwrought review of Kylie's "Showgirl Homecoming" without first placing the event in some kind of context. I feel like I have always known Kylie. With the exception of her fabulous sister, I can't say that about any other celebrity or performer. "Neighbours" was my after school TV show of choice and Charlene was obviously my favourite character. Mostly due to the fact that she wore men's overalls, yet still managed to have an immaculate perm. Charlene was also one tough bitch, arriving in Ramsey Street and breaking into Madge's house! Yes, I remember Kylie's first episode on the show.
Kylie instantly clicked with me, mostly because I felt sorry for her being stuck in Dannii's shadow. Stop laughing, it's true! Back in the day, Dannii was THE preferred Minogue and probably the coolest teenager on the planet. I used to watch in amazement as Dannii rocked "Young Talent Time" week in/week out with her scintillating Madonna covers and gravity defying teased fringe. Everything changed one day in the late 1980s when, to the amazement of just about everyone, Kylie appeared in the top 10 with "The Locomotion". I bought the song with my pocket money the next day and have purchased every release since.
I can't logically explain the overwhelming sense of affection I feel towards Kylie, apart from saying that she was the soundtrack to my childhood and adolescence. I think I can tie in just about any event in my life with a Kylie song or album. I got bashed at a school camp for wearing an "Enjoy Yourself" t-shirt, the first time I went to a concert without adult supervision was Kylie's "Rhythm Of Love" extravaganza at the Entertainment Centre and my first Mardi Gras in the mid 1990s had Kylie as the special guest performer. I guess, Kylie also played a big role in my coming out. In the mid 90s Kylie was considered to be about as cool as Nicki Webster. And like that demonic redhead, Kylie's fans seemed to be exclusively gay or female. Saying you were into Kylie was as good as publically declaring that you were into cock!

Then there are the funny Kylie memories, like attending the lauch party for "Did It Again" on Oxford Street, which sounded impressive but turned out to be four trannies doing the dance routine from the video in the middle Hum Records. Back in the day, Kylie was positively underground! I remember going to line up for tickets to "Intimate & Live", the tour that accompanied "Impossible Princess" in Australia, with my friend Chris. Such was the state of Kylie's career at the time that we didn't bother arriving until an hour before Ticketek opened, assuming we would be the only tragic queens there. To our amazement, we turned into Elizabeth Street and were greeted by a line of fans that stretched down several blocks.
Kylie has not only accompanied me through the years but also across several continents! When I was living in Germany, I was lucky enough to see a Kylie show in Hamburg just as her international career was taking off again. Kylie played her upcoming single "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" to a rather indifferent audience. That version was more guitar based than the synth drenched cut that would become a classic and sounded rather ordinary at the time. In 2000, I visited with a friend who was doing a university exchange in Georgetown and to our surprise, we stumbled into "Kylie night" at a Washington gay bar on my first night in the city.
Enough of my boring life story, the point of this post is the Kylie concert experience and I have, somewhat impressively, managed to completely ignore it. I feel guilty to say that I was underwhelmed by the past couple of tours - but fuck it, I was! I admired the artistry and style of the "Fever" tour, which I saw several times when I returned to Australia. My only gripe was the overwhelming need to be ironic and clever. Some of Kylie's natural charm went AWOL. My favourite moment of 2005 was going to see "Showgirl", again in Hamburg, with my friend Barbara. Despite some great moments, I felt that the show was missing something. Indicative of what was to come, we noticed Kylie crying between songs towards the end of the concert. We all assumed she was simply overcome with emotion. In retrospect, I think Kylie had been feeling like shit for some time and really had to push through those last few European dates. Hence, the workman-like performance.
We all know what came next, with the Australian leg of "Showgirl" being postponed for well over a year. The first few weeks of Kylie's illness were awful and it was strange to feel so concerned about someone you don't even know. I didn't record myself singing "Wind Beneath My Wings" acapella and send it to Kylie (like some mental Delta fans - who I really should name and shame - did for their hideous icon) but she was on my mind. I followed the treatment, diagnosis, poured over the pictures, tuned into her first interview, turned a blind eye to that horrible children's book and recently, as reported, bathed in "Darling". When the tour was announced, it felt like something had come full circle.
Last night's concert had a strange symmetry to it in a number of ways. I went with Chris, my "Intimate & Live" friend, and the concert was staged at the Entertainment Centre, the same place I saw Kylie's "Rhythm Of Love" tour back in the early 1990s. However, times had definitely changed. This time around my friends weren't concerned about buying booze with fake ID but with concealing vials of G and smuggling in their crack pipes (yes, I mix with a classy crowd!). Most of the audience was still out from the night before - and still out of it! With loud snorting sounds coming from every cubicle in the bathroom, sweaty guys clinging to water bottles and dancing manically to ballads, the evening was beginning to feel more like a dance party than a concert.
And then Kylie finally appeared on stage like a beautiful doll in her ridiculous head dress and the outrageous comments that only bitchy queens can muster ("What's this show called again, love?", random voices: "The Oncology Tour, doll", "Kylie's Greatest Tit Show, girl") gave way to excitement, affection and ultimately respect. "Showgirl Homecoming" is an overwhelming visual feast and a vast improvement over the original concert. It's fun, irreverent, artistic, clever and ambitious without ever trying too hard. Kylie doesn't get lost in the sets, costumes or clever references. This show is all about her personality and vision. Kylie has finally let her guard down and gives her fans the "ultimate Kylie" experience.
Here is a slightly edited version of an inebriated review I posted last night at Toy's Haven when I stumbled home (there is an off-topic, it's not all La Toya!):
"Showgirl Homecoming" takes the "Showgirl" experience to a whole new level. The opening act is still slightly dodgy due to that annoyingly stilted version of "Better The Devil You Know" that marred the first concert but the rest of the show is absolute heaven. Here is a very quick recap because I'm drunk, tired and have to be at work in about 4 hours. My highlights:
- Hearing the new song, "White Diamond", which Kylie wrote with the Scissor Sisters. Think "I Don't Feel Like Dancin'" meets "Comfortably Numb". The chorus is gorgeous and goes something like "I'm your white diamond and I'll burn for you". Don't quote me on it though, because I'm not exactly sober. Jake could also be heard on the backing tape, so I assume the song has been recorded. It needs to be released ASAP because it smells like a hit.
- The Andy Warhol inspired "factory" sequence was amazing. I don't think many people will get the Warhol reference (favourite crowd comment - "Someone's stolen Delta's wig from the ARIAs!") but it doesn't matter. The 90s rave party setting was a joy. This segment also included, to my complete and utter amazement and delight, clips from "Do You Dare?" and "Keep on Pumpin' It"! The song with the best fan reaction was "Shocked".

- The bizarre Indian puppet dance segment with Kylie dressed as a genie, dancing with men in white robes was stylish, classy and evocative. Kylie included a lot of songs from "Impossible Princess" in this segment, including a brilliant rendition of "Cowboy Style". "Too Far" got the biggest crowd response, which was most pleasing because I thought no one would remember it. Indie Kylie lives on!
- The gay porn segment - ie "Red Blooded Woman" - has been gayed up to an even greater extent (I didn't think it was possible either!). The dancers still have their shower and work out but this time there are massive screens with men in underpants twisting around in boxes and the gayest exercise routines I have ever seen! The semi-naked men doing push-ups on each other seemed to go down well with the kids and straight couples and got all the gay boys hot and bothered. It really was like gay porn to a Kylie soundtrack... now there's an idea!
- The first half of the show ended with a special appearance by Bono, who sang "Kids" with Kylie. The response was so intense, I thought the building would collapse. This was also memorable due to the old queens in front of us saying - "God, Jason Donovan's got fat"! I think the whole Robbie Williams phenomenon has entirely passed them by (half their luck!). Here's a clip of the duet for your viewing pleasure!
- The second half began with her cover of Judy Garland's "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I've always maintained that this song should only ever have been performed by Ms Garland. I found Kylie's rendition painful in the last concert because it was an "I'm so clever with my gay references" moment as opposed to a heartfelt interpretation. This time around I believed every word and the song was incredibly touching.
- A big shock was the Madonna tribute in the segment which appears to be influenced by Kander & Ebb musicals. Kylie sings the rap in "Vogue" and does the dance routine. The tribute was brief but sweet and fits in well with the rest of the concert. The best reaction in this section of the concert was for "Dreams", which sounded positively otherworldly. I loved the prevalence of "Impossible Princess" numbers.
- "Hand On Your Heart" was an upbeat dance number this time around, not that irony laden, dub remix crap that Kylie did in "Showgirl" last time. It was probably my favourite moment UNTIL Kylie sang "Turn It Into Love"! I almost cried. It has to be one of my favourite Kylie songs and it was great to hear it live. I have to pull out "Kylie" and give that song a spin.
- The encore involved an AMAZING rendition of "Light Years", which was a much appreciated addition. The whole "thank you for flying KM air" was gorgeous! "Light Years" appears to have taken the spot of "Your Disco Needs You" which is fine by me. The only other missing songs that I picked out were "Please Stay" and "In Denial". Apart from those mentioned above, other additions include clips from "Finer Feelings" and "I Guess I Like It Like That".
In conclusion, "Showgirl" was much improved and extremely fabulous. I bet the Kylie/Bono duet appears on youtube within seconds because about 10,000 people were recording it on their phones. I'm devastated I left my camera at home but I'll take some shots at the next show. The concert was as close to perfect as I've seen - the only way it could have been improved would be with a La Toya duet or at least a cover of Sexbox. I'm tired and emotional - good night!

My First Post
Stay tuned for some fabulous crap in the not too distant future!
